As a proud father, I find myself reflecting on the journey of my son, Quinn, and his path to graduation. It's a story that takes an unexpected turn and highlights the beauty of life's twists and turns.
A Change of Plans
Quinn's college journey began with a strong affinity for Texas A&M, a team he adopted as his favorite. His early years were filled with idolizing players like Johnny Manziel and Ben Malena, and even a run-in with an Alabama-loving teacher. I, as his father, had envisioned him donning the iconic Texas A&M ring, a symbol of pride and achievement.
However, as Quinn grew, so did his aspirations and a sense of sarcasm that often left me amused. His transformation from a pudgy freshman to a muscular junior mirrored his changing perspective on life and his future.
The Road Less Traveled
Despite my initial objections, Quinn's decision to venture beyond the familiar and attend LSU was met with encouragement from my wife, Irma. She understood the value of experiencing life elsewhere, just as she had done when she left Los Fresnos for Cal-Berkeley. While I argued for the financial benefits of staying close to home, Quinn's wanderlust won out.
The choice of LSU was not without its challenges. I found myself in the unusual position of supporting a team I had sworn never to wear its colors. Yet, as Quinn made his way through college, I discovered that the LSU fraternity boys weren't so bad after all. They became a part of our family, and I even gained favor with some of their parents, despite the occasional taunting.
A Father's Pride
The moment of truth arrived as Quinn prepared to graduate with a degree in finance. He would be the first Buchanan in our family to achieve this milestone, a fact that filled me with immense pride. My own family's lack of a college education made this achievement all the more special.
While I may have dreamed of buying him an A&M ring, the reality of an LSU graduation led me to a different purchase - a $25 purple-and-gold T-shirt proclaiming me an 'LSU dad.' And you know what? I'll wear that T-shirt with damn pride.
A New Perspective
As I reflect on Quinn's journey, I realize that life often takes us on unexpected paths. What matters is the growth, the experiences, and the memories we create along the way. So, here's to the graduates, to the proud parents, and to the beauty of embracing life's surprises.
